Day book, Oct. 1860-Jan. 1862 (p.29-483), of business identified on spine as that of "B.T. and Company," [Benjamin A. Tillman?]; volume records sales at general merchandise store in Horry County, S.C., during Civil War, with newspaper clippings, 1886-1887 (p. 1-28), pasted over earlier entries; annotations list names of newspapers and date of publication; topics pertain to labor issues, free trade, tariffs, etc.; newspapers cited published in New York, South Carolina, Georgia, and elsewhere. Clippings, maps, a few illustrations and political cartoons from various newspapers, ca. 1886-1887, re labor, socialism, cotton trade, agricultural concerns, and free trade; topics discussed in S.C. newspapers include comments on sales of wine and alcohol at new store in Horry, S.C.; "Farmers to the Front: Call for Agricultural Convention at Columbia"; and essay, "Is the Negro a Failure? Major Harry Hammond Does Not Think So," from an Augusta, Ga., newspaper. Other topics, primarily from New York papers, discuss labor issues and activities of Henry George, including "Editors who Coddle Socialists" and "Land and Labor Party: Henry George ... predicts that the Land Doctrine will break the Solid South and Be victorious in 1892."
